How much does mould air sampling cost

Mould air sampling with Mould Mates starts from $650, which covers a $200 callout fee plus $150 per sample, with a minimum of three samples. The price rises with the number of samples a property needs, which depends on how many rooms you want tested and how large or open-plan the home is. The price is also affected by how urgently you want the lab to process your samples. Samples are tested by an independent, NATA accredited laboratory, and all prices include GST.

Question 1 of 5

Can you already see the mould?

Air sampling is most commonly used when you cannot see any mould. We also use it to identify the spore types present and where they are coming from. If mould is already visible, treatment is usually the better first step.

Question 2 of 5

How many rooms have a musty smell?

Count the rooms where you notice a musty or earthy smell. Choose 0 if there is no smell anywhere.

Question 3 of 5

How many other rooms are you concerned about?

Rooms with no smell but that you would still like tested, for example a child's bedroom or a room that has had damp before. Choose 0 if there are none.

Question 4 of 5

Would you consider your home larger than average or open-plan?

For example 4 metre and higher ceilings, open-plan kitchen, living and dining, or extra-large rooms like a 6 by 9 metre master bedroom. Large or open spaces need more than one sample to test properly.

Question 5 of 5

Which suburb is the property in?

We service Brisbane, Gold Coast and Northern Rivers. We ask this to see if a travel charge would apply.

What air sampling is for

Air sampling helps us identify hidden mould without cutting holes in walls. It does not find the mould for you. It tells us whether spore counts in your home are elevated, identifies the types of spores present, and points to what area the mould is likely coming from, so we know where to look. It is most useful when there is a musty smell but no visible mould.

What is included in the price

Every air sampling job includes a callout fee for the visit, the samples themselves, and independent NATA accredited laboratory analysis. One sample is always taken outside as a control, so your indoor readings can be compared against the normal outdoor spore levels for your area. Results come back in three to five business days once the laboratory receives the samples. Faster turnaround is available for which the lab charges a higher fee for.

What changes the price

Two things move the price:

Number of rooms tested. We take one sample per room of concern, plus the outdoor control, with a minimum of three samples in total. More rooms means more samples.

Home size. Large or open-plan spaces, such as high ceilings or an open kitchen, living and dining area, need more than one sample to test properly, so a larger home needs more samples than an average one.

Indicative price guide

Each sample is $150 on top of the $200 callout fee. We confirm the exact number of samples once we have talked through your situation, and it can change on site. A travel charge may apply outside the Gold Coast, which we confirm when we call.

Common Questions

How much does mould air sampling cost on the Gold Coast?

Mould Mates starts from $650, made up of a $200 callout fee plus $150 per sample, with a minimum of three samples, including GST. The total depends on how many samples your property needs, which comes down to the number of rooms tested and the size of the home.

How many air samples do I need?

We need need a minimum of three samples: one in a problem room, one in a comparison room, and one outdoors as a control. Larger homes, open-plan spaces, or more rooms of concern need more, because one sample covers roughly an average sized room. We confirm the number once we have talked through your situation.

What does a mould air sample tell you?

An air sample tells you whether the spore count inside your home is elevated compared with outside, and which types of spores are present. It is read against an outdoor control sample so the indoor result is meaningful. It does not pinpoint the mould on its own, but it confirms whether there is a hidden problem and helps us know where to look.

Why is there an outdoor sample?

An outdoor sample sets the baseline for the normal spore levels in your area, we call this “normal fungal ecology”, so your indoor readings can be compared against it. Without that control, an indoor number on its own does not tell you whether levels are actually high. The outdoor control is included in the minimum three samples.

Do I need air sampling, or treatment?

Air sampling suits a musty smell with no visible mould, where you need to confirm whether there is a hidden problem. If you can already see the mould, treatment is usually the better first spend, and our mould treatment cost page will price that. Some people do both, and we will talk you through it when we call.
